A main factor inside of any aquaponic system is aquaponic plants. Without the addition of plants the aquaponic system will just not work. Anyone can grow a plant in earth, we've all tried it and succeeded but it take's up a lot of room to get a decent 'crop' going. When you are growing in earth you know exactly what to do but it is a little bit of a bind, for example - If the plant starts to look a little unhealthy and tips over we give it water. If the leaves start to turn an unhealthy yellow color we can add plant food or compost.
With aquaponics and aquaponic plants all this is not needed. Aquaponics will do this in auto-pilot, no fussing, no messing about. So what can you call successful aquaponic plants? Well, you can grow just about any plant inside an aquaponics system, some being harder than others. I have a few friends who really enjoy ( and have great success ) growing certain types of herbs with aquaponics, others have had good results with typical flowers.
Your choice of aquaponic plants does not stop there, here is a list of the plants I have had success with:
- Varieties of fruit
- Cucumbers
- Tomatoes
- Peppers
- Spinach
Now don't think that's it, I have had success with other aquaponic plants but I found these the easiest. So why are aquaponic plants so important to an aquaponics system? Well, lets try to look at the workings of the system on a basic level.
The fish in the system are fed their food and they produce waste into the water. In the water the waste turns to nutrients and the plant roots take up the nutrients and grow. The important fact is that the plant acts as a filter for the water making it a perfect home for the fish. This is why aquaponic plants are so important to the system - fish and plants help each other.
It's worth keeping in mind that plants that have larger nutritional demands and will only do well in a heavily stocked, well established aquaponic system. Examples of these plants will be beans or maybe peas.
